The Redesign Challenge Skill Contest Official Rules
The Redesign Challenge Skill Contest (“Contest”) is void where prohibited by law. NO DONATION, PURCHASE OR PAYMENT OF ANY KIND IS NECESSARY TO ENTER THE CONTEST OR WIN A PRIZE.
1. Sponsor and Purpose
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a charitable trust existing under the laws of the State of Washington, U.S.A., with its principal office at 500 Fifth Ave. North, Seattle, WA 98109 (“Foundation”), is the Sponsor of the Contest. To further the Foundation’s priorities, the Challenge and the Contest are designed to facilitate an online community to constructively explore, shape and form ideas to improve classroom education through video.
Employees, officers, and directors of the Foundation, officers and directors of entities affiliated with or advising the Foundation, and officers, directors, and employees of advertising, promotion, and production agencies serving the Foundation, or their respective immediate families (parents, spouse, children, siblings) or individuals residing in their household (whether or not related), are not eligible to enter the Contest.
3. Entry or Entries
There are two means to enter the Contest and win. Under either means of entry, you need to contribute an idea to enhance classroom education through video and otherwise participate on the Website. Any entry into the Contest and/or acceptance of a prize represents your acknowledgement that you have read, understand and agree to be bound by these Official Rules, and that all decisions of the Foundation and its affiliated entities about the Contest are in their sole discretion and binding in all respects. You also agree by entering the Contest that your idea for enhancing education may be publicly available for comment on the Website, otherwise publicly shared, and used to further classroom education and Foundation priorities.
4. Entry Periods and Means of Entry
There are two means of entry which you can follow to be eligible to win a prize:
First Entry Method:
To be eligible for a prize via the First Entry Method, contribute an idea at the Redesign Challenge Website starting May 26, 2015 at 7:00 a.m. EST and ending June 22, 2015 at 11.59 p.m. EST (“First Entry Method Prize Period”). Each week during the First Entry Method Prize Period, a prize will be awarded to the three (3) entries that are judged with the highest score during each week of the First Entry Method Prize Period. The entries will be judged by a panel of educational professionals acting as site facilitators using the following criteria:
- Positive Community Response (25%)
- Innovation (25%)
- Feasibility (25%)
- Potential Impact (25%)
The three highest scoring entries each week during the First Entry Method Prize Period will be chosen as the potential winning entries. Non-winning entries will remain eligible to win in subsequent weeks within the First Entry Method Prize Period, if any. The First Entry Prize Period weeks are as follows:

A total of twelve (12) entries will be chosen to receive a prize from the First Entry Method.
If there is a tie score among or between entries, the judges will determine a potential winner among the tied entries for the First Entry Prize Period. In no event will any Contest entrant be eligible to win or be awarded more than one Prize.
Second Entry Method:
To be eligible for a prize via the Second Entry Method, share an experience, contribute an idea, and otherwise participate on the website community at the Redesign Challenge Website starting May 21, 2015 at 7:00 a.m. EST and ending June 22, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. EST (“Second Entry Prize Period”). During the Second Entry Prize Period, three (3) educational professionals chosen by the Foundation will chose six (6) prize winners based on their overall contribution to the redesignchallenge.org website according to the following criteria:

- Innovation (25%)
- Feasibility (25%)
- Potential Impact (25%)
If there is a tie score among or between entrants, the judges will determine a winner among the tied entries during the Second Entry Method Prize Period.
In no event will any Contest entrant be eligible for or awarded more than one prize.
5. Prize and Odds of Winning
The Foundation will award a $50 gift card for each of the twelve (12) First Entry Method winners, as well as award an invitation to attend the Redesign Challenge convening event on July 31-August 2, 2015 in Washington DC to further develop ideas and recipes. The Invitation to the convening event includes transportation to and from Washington DC and the potential winner’s legal residence, lodging in Washington DC for two nights, and meals, all to be arranged by the Foundation.
The total retail value of the Prize depends on where the potential winner legally resides but ranges from approximately $1100 to $1800.
The Foundation will award each of the six (6) Second Entry Method winners an invitation to attend the Redesign Challenge convening event on July 31-August 2, 2015 in the Washington DC to further develop Redesign Challenge ideas and recipes. The invitation to the convening event includes transportation to and from Washington DC and the potential winner’s legal residence, lodging in Washington DC for two nights, and meals, all to be arranged by the Foundation.
Foundation reserves the right to substitute Prize with another prize of greater or comparable value, as determined by Foundation. Prizes are non-transferable and no substitutions or cash awards are allowed, except at the discretion of the Foundation. No replacement for lost or stolen prizes. The Prize is awarded "AS IS" and WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND express or implied, including, without limitation, any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. The gift card Prize is subject to the gift card terms and conditions, and weekly winner agrees to look solely to gift card issuer for redemption of gift card.
Gift card issuer is not affiliated with or otherwise associated with this Contest.
Odds of winning a Prize depend on the number of eligible entries received.
6. Notification and Conditions of Winning Prize
Foundation or its representative will notify any potential winner of a Prize for each Prize Period through the email provided to the Redesign Challenge Website. Entrants are responsible for providing an accurate email address and other contact information and keeping that information up to date.
Foundation reserves the right to determine eligibility for winning Prize and to require the individual to confirm his or her agreement to these Official Rules before Prize is awarded.
Foundation will attempt to contact the potential winner no more than two (2) times during a seven (7) day period. If notification attempts for a potential prize winner fail for any reason, or if a potential prize winner or his or her Entry does not comply with these Official Rules or the Foundation’s directions upon notification, the Prize may be forfeited. Only one Prize may be awarded to any person during any Prize Period for this Contest.
Any individual awarded a Prize is responsible for the payment of all federal, state and local taxes pertaining to any aspect of the Prize and for providing to Foundation any information needed to comply with the Foundation’s tax reporting obligations before any Prize is awarded. All charges and expenses related to delivery, acceptance, and use of the Prize not specifically identified in these Official Rules are solely the responsibility of the Winners, including but not limited to: taxes, gratuities, insurance, bag check fees, parking fees, laundry service, alcoholic beverages, incidentals (including mini-bar), phone charges, merchandise, souvenirs and other expenses.
To receive the travel component of the Prize, a potential Winner must possess all identification and/or travel documents necessary to travel and be willing to sign any other legal documents required by the Foundation. The Released Parties (defined below) are not responsible for any cancellations, delays, diversions or substitutions, or any act or omission whatsoever with respect to the Prize. Winners must comply with all hotel check-in requirements, including, but not limited to, the presentation of a credit card.
Travel itineraries and details will be arranged by the Foundation at its sole discretion. Once booked, no changes will be made to travel details, except at Foundation’s sole discretion. The Foundation will not replace lost or stolen tickets, travel vouchers or certificates or similar items.
Any travel-related tickets issued in conjunction with the Prize are not eligible for upgrades. Any unclaimed and/or unused element of the Prize will be forfeited and will remain the property of the Foundation. No refund or compensation will be made in the event of the cancellation or delay of any means of travel related to the Prize. Travel related to the Prize is subject to the terms and conditions set forth by the Foundation’s determined travel prize supplier, as detailed in the passenger ticket contract issued by such supplier. THE FOUNDATION SHALL HAVE NO LIABILITY FOR ANY PERSONAL INJURIES, DEATH, PROPERTY DAMAGE, OR OTHER DAMAGES OR EXPENSES RESULTING FROM OR ARISING OUT OF ANY TRAVEL RELATED TO THE PRIZE OR ANY OTHER ASPECT OF A WINNER’S ACCEPTANCE OR USE OF THE PRIZE.
7. Restrictions on Content of Entry
To be eligible, the Entry must relate to exploring, shaping and forming ideas to improve professional learning videos, consistent with the Foundation’s education priorities. Entries must be in English, include correct syntax, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Entry may not contain material that violates or infringes another person’s or entity’s rights, including but not limited to any privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, such as copyright or trademark. Entry may not disparage the Foundation or any other person, entity or organization or group. Entry may not contain material that is inappropriate, inconsistent with the charitable goals of the Foundation, violent, indecent, obscene, hateful, tortious, defamatory, slanderous or libelous, or that degrades or demeans the human form, image or status of women, men or the members of any group based on race, religion, ethnic background, sexual orientation or any other status. Foundation reserves the right to disqualify and remove any Entry from the Website that Foundation determines, in whole or in part, in its sole discretion, does not comply with Foundation’s priorities or the terms and conditions of these Official Rules. Further, no Entry may contain any personal identifiable information or images of students or anyone under the age of 18, including but not limited to student information that may be protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”), without the written consent of the person’s parent. Confirmation of such consent must accompany any entry submission that contains such information or images.
Foundation reserves the right to disqualify and remove any Entry or content from the Redesign Challenge Website that Foundation determines, in whole or in part, in its sole discretion, does not comply with Foundation’s priorities, the terms and conditions of the Redesign Challenge Website or these Official Rules.
8. Original Work and Legal Right to Submit Work
By submitting an Entry, you represent and warrant that, consistent with the terms of the Official Rules: (a) the Entry is your original work; (b) you own any copyright applicable to the Entry; (c) the Entry does not violate, in whole or in part, any existing copyright, trademark, or any other intellectual property of any other person, organization or entity; (d) any third party content included in your Entry (such as music or content) is not protected by copyright or any other right, or you have a license to use the music or content for any purpose, specifically including the Contest and Contest; (e) you are unaware of any contractual obligations you have inconsistent with these Official Rules; (f) you are not disclosing the confidential, trade secret or proprietary information of any other person or entity; (g) the entry does not contain any personal identifiable information or images of students or anyone under the age of 18, including but not limited to information that may be protected under FERPA, without written parental consent; and (h) you have full power and all legal rights to submit an Entry in full compliance with these Official Rules and the Redesign Challenge Website Terms and Conditions.
9. License and Right to Use Likeness to Foundation
By submitting an Entry, you grant permission and a worldwide, perpetual, royalty-free nonexclusive license to the Foundation, the Contest and any affiliated entities to use, reproduce, create derivative works, perform, display, distribute, copy, post and share the Entry on any media now known or developed in the future. The Foundation, the Contest and any affiliated entities shall have the right to use or not use the Entry in any manner or medium they may chose now or in the future.
By submitting an Entry, you agree that the Foundation may use your name, likeness, statements, Entry, city and state of residence, biographical information, voice, photo and/or video to promote the Contest and the charitable goals of the Foundation related to your Entry, worldwide and in perpetuity, in any and all forms of media and print, now known and hereafter devised, including without limitation on the Internet, without restriction as to frequency or duration, and without compensation, consideration, notification or further permission, except as prohibited by law. Such use may include, but is not limited to use in or on social media, the Foundation’s website, the Redesign Challenge website, in press releases and in connection with any events or activities associated with the Foundation. By submitting an Entry, you further agree that you understand that any ideas, suggestions, and/or concepts included in your Entry will be publicly disclosed, available for comment and may be used by others. You waive all rights, claims and any cause of action that you may have against the Foundation or any third parties, including other users of the Redesign Challenge website, related to any ideas, suggestions and/or concepts that may be disclosed in your Entry and any comments about any such ideas, suggestions and/or concepts.
10. Foundation’s Sponsorship and Operation of Contest
The Foundation has the right to remove and disqualify any Entries without notice to any entrant in its sole discretion.
Neither the Foundation nor its agents or affiliated entities are responsible for any illegible, lost, stolen, late, damaged, incomplete, mutilated or misdirected Entries or for any problems or technical malfunctions related to the electronic submission of Entry. If all required information is not provided or Entry is illegible, or technically inaccessible, the Entry will be disqualified. Any Entry that does not comply with the Official Rules can be withdrawn and/or rejected, and deemed ineligible.
If, for any reason, the Contest is not capable of running as planned including the unavailability of the Prize for any reason, the Foundation reserves the right in its sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Contest at any time. By entering the Contest, you acknowledge that no joint venture, partnership, employment, or agency relationship exists between you and the Foundation, or any of its affiliated entities or advisors, arising from your Entry or the Foundation or its affiliated entities and advisors featuring, using or publicizing your Entry.
By entering the Contest, you agree to these Official Rules and the decisions of the Foundation, and any affiliated entities or persons, on behalf of yourself and each of your respective heirs, executors, administrators, legal representatives, successors and assigns (“Releasing Party”), and by entering, you release, defend and hold harmless the Foundation, any affiliates, subsidiaries, advisors and individuals acting as judges, and their respective officers, directors and employees as applicable (“Released Parties”) from any and all causes of action, suits, debts, dues, sums of money, accounts, reckonings, bonds, bills, covenants, contracts, controversies, promises, lost profits, indirect or direct damages, consequential damage, incidental damages, punitive or exemplary damages, judgments, claims and demands whosoever, in law, or equity, whether known or unknown, foreseen or unforeseen, which any Releasing Party has or may ever had, now or hereafter, arising from or related to the Contest, these Official Rules, the preparation of any Entry materials, delivery, misdelivery, acceptance, possession, attendance at, travel related to, misuse, and/or use of or inability to use any Prize.
By entering the Contest, you agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Foundation, its officers, directors, employees, owners, agents, affiliates, advisors and licensees from and against any and all claims, actions, demands, and liabilities, including those raised or brought by third parties, and any costs and expenses, including, without limitation, reasonable attorney and professional fees and costs and other expenses of any nature incurred in the investigation and defense of any such claims resulting from your breach of any provision of these Official Rules, or any representation or warranty you provide herein, or otherwise arising in any way out of your Entry into the Contest, whether now known or unknown, or anticipated or unanticipated. The Foundation reserves the right to take exclusive control and defend any such claim otherwise subject to indemnification by you, in which event you will cooperate fully with the Foundation in asserting any available defenses.
13. Choice of Law
The Contest shall be governed by and interpreted under the laws of the State of Washington without regard to conflict of law provisions. By entering the Contest, you agree that any disputes, claims causes of action or controversies arising out of or in connection with this Contest or any Prize shall be resolved by the State and Federal courts covering Seattle, Washington, which shall have sole jurisdiction of any controversy regarding or arising from the Contest, these Official Rules or any Prize. BY ENTERING THE CONTEST, YOU WAIVE ANY AND ALL OBJECTIONS TO JURISDICTION AND VENUE IN THE COURTS COVERING SEATTLE, WASHINGTON AND SUBMIT TO THE JURISDICTION OF THE COURTS. Further, you acknowledge and agree that you may only assert claims on your own behalf and not on behalf of any other person or entity arising from or in connection with this Contest, these Official Rules or any Prize.

Entries cannot be individually acknowledged or returned or deleted after submission.
