In Stage 1, we heard that watching a video by itself isn’t often helpful.
Video for Teacher Reflection, Learning, and Safe Collaboration
I believe this model could give teachers the opportunity to take back ownership of their professional learning. This is what we want for our students, so why wouldn't we empower our teachers in this same way?
Teachers can form collaborative teams, much like a PLCs. Preferably these groups would be self-selected, not assigned my admin. These teams work together to reflect on teaching practices, share ideas, & use video to improve their practice. This would be a safe community where teachers can watch video of their own teaching & specific lessons to help reflect on their own teaching as well as to help or inform other teachers. Sometimes teachers might focus on specific skills. Goals can be discussed with the team. This can also be a powerful teaching too because often it is hard and not is impactful to teach something new if you haven't seen it or experienced it yourself. Again, something we know is a best practice for our students, but don't necessarily apply to ourselves. I also believe that making the learning as personal as possible makes it more meaningful, so videos among people who know each other is much more powerfult than videos of "others."
