Videos To Support Development of Teacher Leadership Pipeline & Career Pathways

Next year I have been charged with launching our district's first "Teacher Leader Academy" the beginning of a teacher leadership pipeline and career pathway for effective educators in my district.

Potential Impact

Video-based learning will be a cornerstone of the academy and a conduit to (IMPACT): 1. Support and grow more NBCT's 2. Develop a community or practice with a lens on cognitive engagement, equity and rigor across classrooms in the district through VLC's (video-based learning communities). 3. Support vertical alignment, particularly at the 5th/6th and 8th/9th transition. 4. Serve as a powerful artifact for teacher evaluation process and for personal coaching goals/reflection. 5. Differentiate professional learning and provide effective teachers with challenging learning opportunities that increase their risk-taking and leadership potential.

Possible Implementation

Videos will be used to support the development of 20 learning lab classrooms across grade levels and content areas and will allow for teachers to "deprivatize" their practice without leaving their classroom for visits and needing sub coverage. Video in connection with live streaming of classroom practice will allow practitioners to conduct virtual and live visits to/with each other. This initial pilot of 20 teachers will serve as mentors for future teacher leaders in subsequent years and will help create a district repository of videos to support evaluation calibration and model effective and equitable teaching practices.

Wow, Jessica! Fantastic project. Congratulations on leading and launching the Teacher Leader Academy. Tell me more about the 20 Learning Lab Classrooms? I'm picturing teams of teachers in a room, observing and discussing the live lessons. My first thought was "sub coverage" and cost. You mentioned that the project would allow teachers to improve practice without leaving the classroom. Tell me more, tell me more!

With video, teachers wouldn't have to visit live! They could livestream their class (via a google hangout) and record it for future use and feedback. And/or teachers could join the livestream class from their own classrooms during an off period...my plan is to reduce sub coverage costs as much as possible but still maximize teachers teaching teachers through virtual (or live) classroom visitations -- this is where I think the RDC can help grow my idea!

I feel the same way about you! Thanks for inspiring so many educators across the nation! #Leadon #LearnOn I hadn't thought about national scale since my brain is consumed with getting this up and running in my own district but hey, why not? :) #DreamBig(ger)? :) When I think about the resource of video repositories (like The Teaching Channel, etc.) I think there is tremendous potential to learn from others on a national scale and to virtually visit colleagues to grow our practice.
