Next year I have been charged with launching our district's first "Teacher Leader Academy" the beginning of a teacher leadership pipeline and career pathway for effective educators in my district.
Video-based learning will be a cornerstone of the academy and a conduit to (IMPACT): 1. Support and grow more NBCT's 2. Develop a community or practice with a lens on cognitive engagement, equity and rigor across classrooms in the district through VLC's (video-based learning communities). 3. Support vertical alignment, particularly at the 5th/6th and 8th/9th transition. 4. Serve as a powerful artifact for teacher evaluation process and for personal coaching goals/reflection. 5. Differentiate professional learning and provide effective teachers with challenging learning opportunities that increase their risk-taking and leadership potential.
Videos will be used to support the development of 20 learning lab classrooms across grade levels and content areas and will allow for teachers to "deprivatize" their practice without leaving their classroom for visits and needing sub coverage. Video in connection with live streaming of classroom practice will allow practitioners to conduct virtual and live visits to/with each other. This initial pilot of 20 teachers will serve as mentors for future teacher leaders in subsequent years and will help create a district repository of videos to support evaluation calibration and model effective and equitable teaching practices.
