Model 360

Making high quality modeling of conceptual, procedural, and applicational learning accessible to students around the world in high poverty and low teacher retention neighborhoods.

Potential Impact

A global community of educators who close the achievement gap by improving their own practice. The Local Model, described under "possible implementation," can be adapted within and between school districts, states, and countries. Novice teachers as well as experienced and veteran educators (National Board, Fishman Award winners, etc.) can also make their practice public and improve upon it. As collaboration among educators increases, so will student achievement.

Possible Implementation

Local Model: a) University/college's director of elementary and/or secondary programs identifies underperforming school and develops partnership b) Pre-service teachers (undergraduate and graduate students) record vetted Common Core State Standards based lessons (frequency to be determined) c) Lessons are uploaded and shared (e.g. Tch Recorder app, Teaching Channel, YouTube, etc.) with administrators, current classroom teachers, and substitutes by grade level and content area d)Lesson is recorded and taught by classroom teacher e) Reflection upon instructional delivery of lesson in grade level and instructional leadership team meetings, and at the pre-service teacher's colloquium f) Constructive feedback provided to pre-service teachers and their instructors (e.g, Google Hangouts, Facetime,Teaching Channel-adding notes consisting of comments and questions to video); and feedback given to classroom teacher g) Repeat steps b-f with implementation of feedback

Sounds like a very comprehensive plan! Could you help me understand Step B? Are you saying both veteran and pre-service teachers record the same lesson? Who is giving the feedback to each group? Thanks so much for your ideas and for clarifying.

Thank you, Val! Pre-service and veteran teachers would not record the same lesson, but they could if a database was created over time. One version of my idea includes improving the practice of pre-service teachers so that they can have instructionally sound first years of teaching and support classrooms where there are not permanent teachers. Another version is where more experienced teachers with proven results partner up to support teachers in under performing schools. Ideally, a long term substitute teacher would give feedback to the pre-service teacher and his/her supervisor. Students could also provide feedback, comments and questions using technology. The lessons could also be recorded for students to watch independent of instruction from substitutes or it could be previewed and modified by perhaps a more experienced teacher in another school setting. That teacher would record his/her adaptation of the lesson and get feedback from teacher who initially recorded it. This feedback might come from a group of colleagues during a grade level meeting. The feedback cycle comes full circle, and that's where the 360 comes into play. I hope this explanation was helpful. Please let me know if you have other questions.

Dunke--Love this idea! I think pre-service teachers, particularly, would definitely benefit from this experience. What are some ways you might measure the efficacy of the program?

Thank you, Brandy! I initially thought of pre-service teachers and my experience coaching first and second year teachers. The largest growth area that I've seen lies in how to clearly and concisely model for students how to meet a learning objective. Depending on the support that veteran teachers have had over the course of their career, modeling may also need refining. One of the major ways that effectiveness could be evaluated is by analyzing student achievement via student formative and summative assessment, which would range from weekly/biweekly to NWEA MAP and PARCC tests. Students could also complete pre-assessments along with a survey to capture their understanding before teacher input is provided and a post-survey after the content has been taught, writing down any questions that they may still have and identifying what may have been confusing about the lesson. This information would be shared with pre-service teachers to improve upon their lessons and could lend itself to reteach opportunities. Please let me know if you have more questions.

Hi Dunke, welcome to the RDC! I love the idea of engaging pre-service teachers! How early in their career as an undergrad student would this process start? Do you see the students archiving their videos throughout the University and compiling a virtual portfolio of their PL showing growth?

Hi, Kip, and thank you! For undergraduate/graduate students, I would begin this process once undergrad/grad students begin to student teach. This way, the experience of a first year can be simulated. Planning time for lessons can occur in graduate classes with collaboration among peers and with mentor teachers. Initially, collaborative planning of lessons will be the norm, and as the year(s) of undergrad/graduate study progresses and portfolios are created, more independent planning and more collaboration around feedback will be normalized. Yes, I definitely see the videos archived through the university and the virtual portfolio is a great idea. I also see universities partnering with school districts throughout the nation and around the world that need high quality instruction to test out the lessons, receive feedback, improve the lessons, and ultimately close the achievement gap.

So now that I'm in DC with all of the innovators, I am thinking that there needs to be a liasion between retired teachers who go back into the classroom and sub, subs with zero experience, and pre-service teachers.
