Experience

I love utilizing technology in the classroom and I find that using tutorial videos via YouTube are very helpful in learning how to utilize all the new and upcoming technology quickly. It gives me a quick overview, which then allows me to think of multiple ways I can implement the new technology with my students.

Welcome, Sam!!! So good to "see" you here. Interesting post; I like how you are thinking about how you can use video to improve your own content knowledge, not just your pedagogical approaches to education.

Hi Sam, so excited that you joined the community! I'm curious about how you select/find the specific videos that you use currently use.

I start by browsing new Google Add-Ons, or other areas of technology I am interested in. From there I search videos around the particular technology that might give a tutorial or show it being implemented in a classroom. Technology is a great tool and sometimes it is hard to find a way to implement it in the classroom for it to have a powerful impact on learning.

Your post made me giggle because my husband just said the same thing when he was trying to fix our son's bike. It's making me thing of cool ideas, but I have to wait until Stage 2. Noooooo! *Val shakes fist* :)

Interesting point. DIY YouTube vids are ever popular. I wonder why a lot of educators don't approach professional learning vids the same way the DIY culture does...on demand modeling of strategies and techniques that remove the mystery from the process of fixing a bike or refining questioning practices etc. I have never thought of prof learning vids in this (kind of punk rock-DIY) way until Val through that out there.

This DIY approach reminds me of the d.school work with 2 minute pd.

Sam - in your experience, are your colleagues using video tutorials in the same way? If not, why ?
